The laboratory attaches great importance to international academic cooperation and communication. Over the years, the close relationships have been established with the renowned institutions in the rail transportation of various countries, such as the United States, Britain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Ethiopia, South Korea, and Japan. The laboratory gives full play to the disciplinary advantages of Southwest Jiaotong University in rail transit, and takes international scientific and technological cooperation platform, joint scientific research projects, international journals, high-level international conferences and international academic positions as the main paths, strives to build an international rail transit frontier academic highland, and has achieved a series of landmark achievements.

The laboratory is committed to building a first-class international cooperation base and promoting high-level international scientific and technological cooperation in rail transit. At present, it has set up the Overseas Expertise Introduction Center for Discipline Innovation (111 Center) on Railway Engineering System Dynamics approved by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Design and Safety Assessment Technology of Modern Rail Vehicle approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, the International Joint Laboratory on Railway Engineering System Dynamics approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and the China-Latin American United Laboratory for Rail Transit approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China. The laboratory cooperates with the Schaeffler Group in Germany to found the Schaeffler Hub of Advanced Research (SHARE at SWJTU), with special focus on components and systems for high-speed trains and observation of new train technologies such as Maglev, Hyperloop, hydrogen-based drive technology and vehicle digitization. Relying on the above international cooperation platforms, the laboratory has carried out multi-dimensional and multi-level cooperation with world-renowned universities and research institutions, such as the niversity of Tokyo, Delft University of Technology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Royal Institute of Technology, Politecnico Milano, University of Southampton, Monash University, to provide support for the development of rail transit technology. For instance, as the only member in Asia, the laboratory was invited to participate in the project “H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015-RISEN: Rail infrastructure systems engineering network” supported by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under Horizon 2020. In cooperation with the University of Southampton, the laboratory hosted the strategic international science and technology innovation cooperation key project "Joint research into key technologies controlling noise and vibration for high-speed railways under extremely complicated conditions" approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China.

The unprecedented modernization and expansion of rail transportation system will require substantial new efforts in scientific research for field-deployable technologies. The laboratory has founded two international academic journals to guide the innovation and dissemination of the discipline knowledge of rail transit. In 2013, the International Journal of Rail Transportation (IJRT) was initiated by Academician Zhai Wanming and Professor Wang Quanping as the Chief Editors and aims to provide an open forum for scientists, researchers, and engineers in the world to promote the exchange of the latest scientific and technological innovations in rail transportation, and to advance the state-of-the-art engineering and practices for various types of rail based transportation systems. Railway Engineering Science (RES) is an international, peer-reviewed, and free open-access journal which is edited by Academician Zhai Wanming, the Chief Editor, together with 33 internationally renowned scholars in the field of rail transit, focusing on basic engineering science and emerging technologies of rail transit and covering the frontier technologies of rail transit in areas like high speed railways, heavy haul railways, urban rail transit, maglev systems, and vacuum pipeline transportation.

The laboratory hosted or organized some international academic conferences and actively participates in international academic exchanges. In 2017, the laboratory initiated and hosted the International Conference on Rail Transportation (ICRT), chaired by Academician Zhai Wanming, and co-organized by ASCE, UIUC and other foreign famous academic institutions. The Second International Conference on Rail Transportation (ICRT2021) will be held in 2021. In 2018, the laboratory took advantage of its own advantages to organize the International Workshop on Evacuated Tube Maglev Transport, aiming to expand international academic exchanges and cooperation in this field, build consensus, break through key core technologies, and promote the development of Vacuum Pipeline Maglev Transportation. The conference will be held once a year and has been held twice so far. The laboratory organized the 18th International Wheelset Congress (IWC2016), the 23rd International Symposium on Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and Tracks (IAVSD2013), the 9th International Conference on Contact Mechanics and Wear of Rail/Wheel Systems (CM2012) and other international conferences for more than 10 times. In recent years, the faculties have made invited keynote presentations in important international academic conferences such as IAVSD for over 40 times. The laboratory holds 17 positions in international academic institutions such as IAVSD. The laboratory holds more than 40 posts in International academic journals such as International Journal of Rail Transportation and International Journal of Fatigue, among which 6 are editor-in-chief and 6 are deputy editor-in-chief. The laboratory invited overseas scholars to hold academic lecture for more than 100 times. Furthermore, about 50 academic papers are published every year in cooperation with overseas scholars, and over 500 trips for international communication have been arranged.
